"I don't want to adapt to my computer, I want my computer to adapt to me." THIS IS THE BEST LINE IN ANY REVIEW. Brutal review here. I love it. These are the issues that have always kept me from getting one.

Luckily it sounds like many of these problems can be addressed via software, so if Apple's listening, maybe we'll get some of this functionality in iOS 13

Wonderful review. Detail, arguments and explanayions. It's sad to hear that it still can't truely be used as a computer and no ext-storage kind of frustrates me. So much power but no way of really using it... but Apple isn't even close to thinking about a "Windows 10"-like iPadOS, with Apps AND Programs compatibility.

Man, that A12X chip makes the 7 watt i5 on the MacBook Air look like a joke. Can't wait until Apple makes MacBooks with their own processors.

am i the only one who thinks that 10-15 years ago apple was about "making the best for our target audience and charge them a lot (but fairly)" and now they are "making the most expensive thing, overprice it, and not really care if it's useful" I've been frustrated with apple on that account for a while now, and every keynote makes me feel worse about staying in the ecosystem. Thinkpad here i come.

I literally spoke to Apple concerning the limitations with the new iPad, they informed me that I should use the cloud instead of an HD because it's still not recognizable. I wanted to replace my MBP with this, unfortunately, Apple isn't there yet. Thank you so much for this video! It's painful to say that the Microsoft Surface Pro is better, I just dislike windows.

You want a device to adapt to you but apples whole ideology is to make the user adapt to their project. Like the famous words: your holding it wrong.

Every apple product review has so much hidden skepticism in them. Subtle or not Apple deserves it with the price range they are aiming for! Love the details going on here with USB c! It's basically cheating.

Tbh i dont even use a laptop anymore. I have my imac... and my phone. And i have a fairly old ipad mini 2nd gen that i should probably trade up for but... i so rarely use it outside of traveling that I just don’t. I have an old laptop but since i got my mac it has mostly been collecting dust. So imo if you have a desktop already... like me... its pretty likely this could replace your laptop because you do most of your work on a desktop and use the ipad as a portable way to carry around your work and do minor edits and etc. but it all just depends on what you do... your lifestyle. I can totally see people who barely need a computer at all just have this and nothing else. Because in my experience the majority of users aren’t your geeky tech savvy types... they’re people who just go on the internet and use word processors and occasionally play app games. And strangely enough, despite the price and power of this ipad being way more than they need, they might get it because they know it will last a very long time through all the updates through the years.

This is a great review, really hits the key points. Even though this iPad is leagues ahead of any other tablet in a lot of ways, I think I'd rather get a Microsoft Surface Pro or even a Pixel Slate because they have more flexible operating systems.

I really love this honest review but I think some of the critiques presented later (ie the iPad didn't have enough apps compatible with all its features yet) are made prematurely. This iPad isn't even available to average consumers yet and since they won't be in stores until Wednesday and won't be shipped to those who ordered it online until mid-November, of course there aren't many apps yet. Developers haven't had much time with these new machines and they haven't released any new material yet because the market isn't even there to purchase yet. Just wait a little longer until the iPad has been out for a while and I guarantee there will be plenty of apps that can take advantage of all the new features on this new device.

I HATE how you keep referencing the top tier iPad. The 1TB model is a show piece, just for crazy rich people. The most iPad most people with ever use is the 256GB model. While that still comes in at about $1600, very expensive, referencing this price would be much more accurate and less sensational than "the 2 thousand dollar iPad!??!!!" Please keep it real Nilay

A non apple fan here, seems you have to clarify that every time you have an objection about a review of an apple product. I'm a huge fan of the verge, listen to their podcasts and recently been shocked about their coverage of Apple products. The overly harsh criticisms of apple's software limitations and the lip service they pay apple's hardware is baffling. As a software developer it's so clear to me I'd rather have industry leading future proof hardware today and hope for a better software experience tomorrow ( future versions of iOS) to take advantage of the hardware (which seems like apple's strategy) than to buy a new hardware every year. iOS is limiting and in its current state not a computer replacement. But I'd want to know if this review will be redone if in 6 months time apple opens up that usb C port for external drives or iOS becomes better. These devices to me seems like what the future can be, if you buy this today you know you're buying a product that can take advantage of the "improved" software that will come in 2 years time without having to buy another and I think reviewers and in particular the verge don't give apple enough credit for that.

Wow Nilay and the Verge team! Great stuff! That's how reviews should be done. Looking past the marketing glitz, really exploring the use cases and asking the right questions that an average consumer might not ask. Absolutely loved the headline on Verge "THE FASTEST IPAD IS STILL AN IPAD" - that summed it up really well. You might have saved many people (including me) from buying an overpowered video and browsing device at 2 to 4 times the price of non-pro iPad. Agree it would be very useful for someone who draws a lot. However, they keep touting photoshop example - seriously how many average users pay and use Adobe photoshop? And I highly doubt that any serious video/photo professional would use an iPad on a regular basis - imagine sacrificing precision of mouse pointer, imagine use cases when one has to hold a button on keyboard and drag mouse pointer while looking at pixels on a giant monitor. Even though one can plug new ipad pro to a monitor, one will still have to look at the ipad (not the monitor) while making adjustments with finger/pencil. This is like selling a new wheelchair which looks beautiful, has Tesla drivetrain and costs much more than an normal electric wheelchair. Sure the new one can go really fast - but would you really on a day to day basis?

This is THE best review ever, not just for the 2018 iPad Pro. And it sums up my own attempts, every year, to migrate entirely to the iPad workflow. And it always ends up in tears and Gumtree ads. This new one is da sexy bomb baby (like a giant iPhone 5/SE), but as Nilay emphasises here, it's all about the software, stupid, and Apple have once again, for reasons associated with greed, failed to deliver, so it is nothing more than a fancy consumption device and posh sketchpad for creatives away from their Wacom tablets. Please Apple, put an engineer/visionary in charge of your company. Am still buying one anyway because it will be a superb sales tool, and the Graphic app is a great easy to use alternative to Illustrator.

I didn’t hear anything in the video that would justify the extra $30 for the 2nd generation pencil, compared to the $99 original. Also to rebut when she said, you don’t *have* to connect the old pencil to the lightning port on the old iPad, it comes with an adapter so you can plug the pencil into a lightning cable, and then directly into an outlet using an AC adapter.

‘The chrome on this new Rolls Royce Supercar prototype isn’t shiny enough!!”. Wow, you guys are crybabies about this iPad Pro. The gestures don’t do what you want automatically? Configure them! Settings can be changed. The Adobe CC isn’t robust enough? Adobe is the one dragging its feet, not Apple. Affinity and Procreate are dominating on the iPad Pro because they bothered to. Adobe was invited to the same party. It’s their fault they showed up at the door three years late. The iPad Pro is new territory. It’s not perfect, but like anything new, a little support and understanding will help it grow into itself. The Third Party will eventually come to the rescue like they always do. It’s just a matter of time. You guys are too young to sound like crotchety 60 year olds. Lighten up!

I love my Galaxy Tab S3, it's probably one of the few android tablets that's actually worth buying. I love it especially because it's the only tablet with an OLED screen. I wish Apple would implement those, but I also love their 120hz screens.

My iPad Pro opens to home screen; the new iPad Pro opening to a locked screen requiring a second action to select home page just wastes valuable time. My partner has a Samsung tablet that includes a mobile phone function which is essential for some secure applications. Because Apple’s plug on keyboard has no backlight I can’t use it in low light so I no longer use it. As my iPad pro and iPad Air often do not respond to touch, not even a thumping on the screen so I find the flimsy stand useless. The iPad Pro screen is so big I often cannot pinch down to close the screen. The method of compression to 567p and back to 1080p is different on Apple tv to Samsung tv so going from iPad to Apple tv to viewing on a Samsung tv gives a poorer quality image than just using the Samsung Smart tv. The Apple software is simply not keeping up with the hardware. It is so bad I wonder if it is deliberate?

I always love the iPad philosophy videos... Apple is slowly circling the wagons around Intel. And Intel knows it. So they can't just pull the rug out because, as the video points out, the app support just isn't there quite yet. But if full Photoshop is around the corner, the writing's on the wall... BTW, why is Verge using Rush? LumaFusion is otherworldly better. Honestly, I'm (pleasantly) surprised Adobe hasn't snapped them up and added them to their horrible subscription service. It wouldn't piss me off, if Apple or BlackMagic did it though. No subscriptions and as long as they kept putting money into developing it, it would be one of those last-remaining vestiges of software value (like Affinity's products).

Really poignant review. One thing I’d like to see mentioned though is that Apple’s own pro apps aren’t available on iPad “Pro”. Logic, Final Cut, and Xcode are more than capable of running on this iPad, but they simply don’t exist for it by virtue of the fact that Apple hasn’t developed them yet.

Here is the thing, one thing that i have learned from Apple.. is "Think Differently" Apple does not want to give you these basic commodities, cos Apple does not want to compete with the mass market, it's a single unit and one single market, and what Apple should have done is bring the multi-touch to MacOS but they won't because their program was not designed to be a multi use machine, Apple wants to transcend early, but the Modern world still stuck in the past and uses the past technology. Apple is about single mind use not a replacement find or changing direction from one angle to the next curve, if Apple was political minded and had a country and it's form of politics would be Democratic AppTopia -if you will.. forget the moderate capitalist society of today but Think differently in our semi-haven world. -- i hope this made some sense to you, i wouldn't mind writing for TheVerge is there an opportunity. ~Great post Nilay.

This is great. I wanted to get ipad pro for a while now and have been considering between the 2nd generation and the 2018 version. And I knew the limitations of Apple's system for the first time due to this video! I am a android user and is going to use the ipad for mostly drawing and watching media, so maybe the problems stated here's not gonna be much of a problem to me. But it is really nice getting to know the limits which I have thought would not exist in this heavily priced product. It is sad that there is no real competitors to Apple in the tablet market. Maybe if it was more competitive, they would strive to make ipads more applealing. Oh well.

Good to see a reviewer finally do an appropriate critical review of the iPad. Everyone else just seems to so blinded by the specs that they haven't stopped to think about how they will (or won't) be able to use it. USB-C is cool, but it is the most limited implementation of that connection thanks to iOS. Anyway, I'm hoping for more reviews like this so that Apple finally ditches iOS on their iPad Pro and load in an actual pro OS (or remove the gazillion iOS handicaps--but that might be more work than it's worth).

Yet another iPad without trackpad/mouse support. I don't care what your feelings are about (seriously; I don't care) this missing feature, but on a device without a home button, this would be fantastic. There is no way that this would hurt iPad sales, and anyone who didn't want the feature wouldn't have to use it, so why not give the option? Let me buy a Magic Mouse to go with my iPad Pro. For a company so focused on user experience and accessory sales, they continue to ignore this request year after year. I don't need anyone telling me how it would be difficult to do or that it would "turn the iPad into a crappy two-in-one". I don't care. It's a feature that should be there if the customer wants it. If you didn't want it, then you wouldn't have to use it. Your experience wouldn't change. But for those who do want it, we're left with nothing.

11:57 Hey William Joel! Have you heard about Affinity photo or Luma Fusion for iPad? Adobe is not the only one company that makes photo/video editing apps.  2200 USD? You can have 64Gb Wifi version of 12'9 iPad Pro for 999 USD (or 256Gb for 1149 USD). Not everybody have to buy 1Tb version.

The only reason why you'd buy this is to show people you have an apple product. Not because it's so innovative or has tons of productivity features. Lol. For that price you might as well buy a really good laptop if you need productivity or a cintiq if you're an artist. But hey, it's an ipad so you gotta have it just because it's apple.

Review is fair. Stop talking about software that can make it a real computer. That the wish that every power user has made since the First iPad, and this has not changed, even a bit. How can you replace a computer with a "thing" that is even not able to let you develop an app for it ? And that's a shame, because it really look gorgeous !! I wasn't surprised that USB-C devices like mass storage wouldn't work. I mean, it's Apple... I understand the frustration though, but seriously, what did you expect? And i know someone will say: "I expect for $2200, my iPad Pro can at least be compatible with multiple USB-C devices, especially with things like expandable mass storage". Well, yeah, again, i get your frustration, but, again, it's Apple. Now, the fact they moved over to USB-C gives me hope for the future. I wonder, does Apple limits us to use devices such as mass storage to prevent us to install third party apps? And, (in their words), "protect us from harm"? I thought this is what Apple said when it came to micro sd cards on the iPhone's as well? Anyway, on that side, i do understand Apple, on the other side, Apple could just let US make the choice, give us a prompt message: Do you want to install? And then just yes/no. Simple. But nooooooooooo. Anyway, still, these iPads Pro are great improvements over last year.

just get a surface...i don't really see the point to glorified phones anymore...unless you're using this for video editing...but there's just more to do on a surface as its not a phone tryin to be a tablet, but a computer tryin to be a tablet...

Why do y’all keep lying and saying the way you charge them Apple Pencil was via sticking it in the bottom when it plugged into an adapter and connected to any lightening cable. Y’all lie and tell half truths but try to come off as credible.

As much as i love this new ipad and my ipad pro10.5, but i dont understand why would i pay that much for a tablet that is as expensive and big as a laptop, and not simply use a laptop. Instead of developing the ipad pro that much, the macbook should have simply started supporting a touch screen and a pen.while preserving the power of a laptop. Your ipad is as big as my macbookpro.

@TheVerge I'm so sure they will replace macOS with iOS soon, because macOS isn't multitouch based, and it's getting more advanced every year. As I mentioned earlier they will replace it like they did with the iPod Classic with is dead now because of the iPhones and the iPod touch. They soon getting more mobile. Also ARM Processors in Macbooks will be coming soon. That's just my thoughts. Fantastic Review btw.
